Fabulous DeVilles
NEWS!

Jim Gallegos is now the DeVille's new Bass player!

It's official! Jim Gallegos will be the regular bass player of the DeVille’s. We have known Jim since the 60's and have always admired his playing as well as his tremendous vocal abilities. Jim will perform with the band at Kim’s Country Kitchen the 16th of March. See the event calendar for details. March 9,2010

It's official, Ron Barringer steps down.

After almost 20 years playing with the band Ron will move on as a Deville. His presence, Grace and smooth style will surely be long remembered. He has always been a strong consistent team player, friend and soulful member of the DeVille’s. He will be missed and will probably be at many of the shows sitting in and continuing to be a presence around the band. We all love you Ron. Feb 20, 2010

New Year, New Decade, New Musical Era for the Band

Wow!! What a year 2009 seemed to fly by. The band learned songs, Recorded the songs on the site and built our new Band Zoogle Website. Our New Year’s Celebration at Kim’s was a blast and a great way to end an uncertain year. Things are looking up, we have a renewed attitude and are full of excitement. We have booked a number of gigs already for the upcoming year and are working on a number of exciting options to add to our shows, such as, additional, horns, keyboards, and we have been rehearsing with two excellent female vocalists. The effect would be sort of like the Commitments, (without the fighting and drinking). OK maybe just a little fighting and drinking, were a party band you know.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas and May this Holliday Season Be Good for you!. We would like to thank those of you who have been enjoying the music. We want you to know we are constantly working on new material and have undergone a complete re vamping of our studio and will be putting our versions of some of the finest rock of all time up your your review.

Pro Tools is the recording choice of the DeVilles!

Our new album "Be thankful for what you got" will be recorded all on Pro Tools Hard ware and software. Pro Tools was developed by U C Berkley graduates Peter Gotcher and Evan Brooks. Both were double majors in electrical engineering and computer science at Berkeley. The first incarnation of Pro Tools started life in 1984 as Sound Designer, while the pair were creating and selling drum sound chips under their Digidrums label. Sound Designer was originally designed to edit sounds for the E-MU Emulator sampling keyboards. Gotcher and Brooks discussed with E-MU Systems the possibility of integrating their renamed 'Sound Tools' software into the Emulator III keyboard released in 1987. E-MU rejected this offer and Gotcher and Brooks started Digidesign.
Sound Tools was debuted on January 20 1989 at NAMM (National Association of Music Merchandisers). At this stage Sound Tools was a simple computer based stereo audio editor. Although the software had the possibility to do far more it was limited by the hard drive technology, which was used to stream the audio and allow for the non-destructive editing that Sound Tools offered.
The first version of Pro Tools was launched in 1991, offering 4 tracks and selling for $6000USD. Digidesign continued to improve Pro Tools, adding a sequencer and more tracks, with the system offering recording at 16bit 44.1 kHz. In 1997 Pro Tools reached 24bit, 48 track versions. It was at this point that the migration from more conventional studio technology to the Pro Tools platform took place within the industry.
Ricky Martin’s "Livin’ La Vida Loca" was the first No. 1 single to be recorded, edited, and mixed completely within the Pro Tools environment by Charles Dye and Desmond Child.
Miami is widely believed to be the first city to broadly adopt Pro Tools in professional recording studios, and is often referred to as the 'Ground Zero' for Pro Tools.
Bob Clearmountain once expressed concern that people would acquire Pro Tools system with little understanding of the editing
The Rapper Gza named his 2008 album after the program.
Pro Tools was used for creating the audio for the game Guitar Hero, using the modeling plug-in Eleven for the guitar sounds.
Fictional heavy metal band Dethlok can be frequently seen using the Pro Tools program on the television show Metalocalypse.
Pro Tools is seen in use in the second season of the new 90210. In the high school newspaper office products from Digidesign are seen and a poster on the wall.
Some famous producers and artists working with Pro Tools:
• Mick Glossop
• Trevor Horn
• Mutt Lange
• Sting
• Linkin Park
• Gorillaz
• Brian Sheil
• Green Day

Tuesday Night at Kim's

This Tuesday December 15th At Kim's The Devilles Will Celebrate Christmas with The Best friends a Band can have. Come on Down!

Fantastic night at Kim's Country Kitchen

We sure had fun last Tuesday when The Fabulous DeVille’s had a night of stars with Harry Robinson (former lead vocalist with Northern California's Slick Brothers Band) He sat in twice with a heartfelt version of "Since I Fell For You" and came back later with a strong version of The Doobie Brother's "Long Train Running". We then had our old friend Gary Edwards sit in singing "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van Morrison then later sang “Domino”. Gary was with Ernie and Drew Sallee for many years in The Catfish Hunter Band before Drew and Ernie started playing with The DeVille’s back in 2002.
We also had the pleasure of playing with Tim White (formerly with Ike & Tina Turner). He played tenor sax, taking many solos and as part of the horn section all night along with the great Clark Calvert. With all of that going on it was cool enough but when we were joined on vocals by Kallie Pile and Carri Werve two dynamite ladies both of which are wonderful singers but with different styles. Kallie sang “Mustang Sally”, “Chain of Fools” and “Blue Bayou”, Carri sang “Desperado” and an original song called “Tuesday Night at Kim's” which is all about Kim's Country Kitchen. Last but not least we had David Lightfoot on harp on “She don’t love me she loves my automobile”. Ron Barringer and Scott Ruskauff shared the Bass Guitar duties for the DeVilles and a great deal of fun was had by all.

The ups and downs of August

Let's start with the down...Ron (The Skyscraper of Love) Barringer seriously hurt his back and has been laid up for awhile.  Everyone who knows Ron, loves Ron and we hope he can get up and around soon.
Now for the ups...We still got to play!!  We had our old friend (and Farmer's Insurance agent) Jim Gallegos fill in on bass and he is a monster player and performer.  We were in Auburn Ca. for the Placer Assoc. of Realtors mixer that was held at the Windermere Real Estate offices. Lot's of food, drinks, and people made for a good time. Thanks to the people at Windermere for being such gracious hosts. We also did a very fun belated wedding reception at the ballroom of The Orchard Lodge at Del Web Lincilon Hills.  Wedding recepions are always a blast and this one was no exception.  Once again, we were at Kim's Country Kitchen for Taco Tuesday and the place was jumpin'! Thanks again Jim for being there for us and playing these gigs. Hope you had fun...we did!
The last event of the month was the Farmer's Market/Hot August Nights event in downtown Lincoln, Ca. This was the last farmers market of the season in Lincoln and it was incredibly fun.  We had Scott Ruskauff on Bass for this event and he did a wonderful job. He's fun, and he helps move equipment (yuk, yuk). Heck, we may just keep him around. Thank's Scott.
We have other events coming up and we're rehearsing like mad to learn new material and polish the rest.  I'll let you know how the shows turn out and hope to see you at one. Come say hi.  As always, I love playing with these guys and can't wait to do it again (except for that equipment moving thing). See ya, Skip.

Get Well Ron!

Ron Barringer, Bass player of the Fabulous DeVilles since the beginning is recovering from his back going out and possibly harming some of the disks. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Fascinating tidbits of ????

Hi all. I haven't updated the news page in awhile so here goes. I't's Friday...I've had a cocktail...and I'm love'n life. Last week we played up in Nevada City at a restaurant called Posh Nosh on Broad Street. They have a patio dining area that seems like it's indoors but if you look up...it's not! It was on Wednesday night which is the Farmers Market night in Nevada City so the band had to be loaded in early as the streets are closed to vehicle traffic, This venue is a very difficult load in and God Bless Geno for getting there early enough do do it. We crammed a 5 piece band where a duo should set up and did what we do ...PLAY! We ran into some old friends from our days performing at Beerman's in lincoln and they lit up the room.  All in all we had a great time there and look forward to our next event in the Nevada City / Grass Valley area.
I alway's love playing (every time) with Gene, Ron, Ernie, and Clark and would carry the equipment up a dirt hill to do it. Although, I hope I don't have to!!!!  Until next time, Peace.
Skip, the drummer for "The Fabulous Devilles".

Lincoln News Messinger Article July 16, 2009

Support local musicians
Carol Feineman, Editor Lincoln News Messinger www.lincolnnewsmessenger.com

My favorite pastime is to hear live music.

Whatever city I’m in, I find the closest venues so I can immediately unwind.

Musicians who effortlessly play their instruments before crowds or jam on the spur of the moment impresses me just as much today as it did at my first concerts back in college.

Even with eight years of piano lessons, I still don’t understand how musicians can decide whether to play by ear in the key of B flat, for example, or the key of F flat.

And after practicing for thousands of hours all these years later, I remain nervous if anyone other than my family hears me messing around on my piano. I couldn’t even imagine making it through one song on stage, much less instantly transposing the chords to another key.

So I think musicians are very lucky.

So does Gene Thorpe (www.genethorpe.com) , who by day is broker/manager of Pavilion Realty, Inc.(www.movingtoplacercounty.com), in Lincoln, and by night, is either practicing or performing his beloved R&B and rock tunes.

Thorpe, who fronts The Fabulous DeVilles, has played professionally, ever since 1961 when he was 14 years old.

Instruments he has mastered include the guitar, keyboards, drum, harmonica, bass and vocals.

Thorpe has been in six bands since 1961, the last 16 years with current and former DeVilles.

In the Sacramento-based Simultaneous Avalanche from 1969 to 1978, Thorpe played rock, R&B and soul across the United States.

“It’s sort of like what the DeVilles do now. James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Sam and Dave, Sly & The Family Stones; horns-based,” Thorpe said. “Music is more fun than anything I can think of, except for a good escrow closing.”

That’s great news since Thorpe rehearsed almost daily this past week.

And he also performed three times this week; Thorpe sat in with Gun Shy at Thursday’s downtown Farmers’ Market; played old-time country songs and standards Friday at Lincoln Manor with another Realtor, Ron Barringer; and was with another band at Granite Springs Church on Sunday.

“The thing is, when you rehearse and refine it, it gives you a great deal of satisfaction. When you play and get good reaction, that’s also great satisfaction,” Thorpe explained. “It’s like writing – you could be like Stephen King and Dean Koontz, get paid lots of money and that’s great. Or, like the rest of us, play for the satisfaction and that’s also great.”

He can’t imagine not being with a band, although a musician’s life includes more than the few hours on stage or the many hours practicing at home.

Also included are the many tedious hours before and after most gigs, such as driving to and from venues, setting up and tearing down heavy equipment, often for little pay and often when their friends are unwinding at home.

In fact, the only aspect Thorpe doesn’t like about his need to play is that he doesn’t see his friends as much as he’d like.

“Maybe the only bad part is you’ve committed so many hours a night that you miss other times when you could be at a friend’s party or wedding,” Thorpe said, before pausing and adding, “That’s the only downside. I would still do it.”

For Thorpe, it’s about building relationships with others, both the audience and his band members.

The best part, Thorpe said, is “watching the audience have fun.”

Doug Weiss, in the Lincoln Highway Band, shares the same sentiments.

“If it’s a concert, how much is the audience into the song? With the dancing, how many people are on the dance floor,” Weiss explained. “If the dance floor is full, we’re doing our job.”

Weiss, a former Cal State Hayward athletic director and baseball coach, is the bass player and shares vocals in the Lincoln Highway Band.

Never mind that this is supposed to be Weiss’ retirement years.

During the summer, Weiss instead is practicing or performing five nights a week with his band mates.

Other seasons, he is working with the Lincoln Highway Band on the average of three days a week.

“We’re having a tremendous time playing music. It makes it better that people are enjoying our music. It’s a win-win,” Weiss said.

Lincoln Highway Band and The Fabulous DeVilles will play the next two Wednesdays in downtown Nevada City. I’m excited that residents in my former hometown will have a chance to hear these two talented Lincoln groups.

I hope that Lincoln fans of the Lincoln Highway Band and The Fabulous DeVilles take a 50-minute ride to Nevada City on July 22 and July 29, respectively, to support them.

Playing music is hard work and takes years to be at a professional level.

But how easy it is for us, the fans, to support Thorpe, Weiss and their other band members at gigs while having a great time ourselves.

The Band Gears up for Bookings....................

The Deville’s are gearing up for the summer season and are now booking September, October, November, and December. If you think of a place The Deville’s would fit in, let them know about the band. Check out the new songs on the song list and the music player. A new version of Vehicle and the Classic Wilson Pickett number "Midnight Hour" are soon coming. Gene will be switching from playing his Gibson SG guitar, to a Fender Stratocaster for a cleaner sound that will better compliment Ernie's Paul Reed Smith Guitar.

Independence Day!!

We played at Mcbean Park on the 4th again this year.  I think this may have been the 16th or 18th year we have done this.  Ron, Gene and I (Skip) started doing this as a Trio a long time ago and boy has this event grown!  It's always been a labor of love to play for the people of Lincoln and it's nice to see this event continue to grow and improve. There were vendors and things for the kids to play on as well as some great music. The professional sound system was provided and run by Procter Sound. I'd like to thank Keith and his staff for making everyone sound so good .  I'd also like to thank everyone for coming out to support us and the other two outstanding bands, Phil Dudley and the Do Rights, and of course, Lincoln Highway. It's a pleasure to be on the same bill with you guys. The fireworks after the show were over the top again this year. Wow, what a display. I believe Mandy Walker is the person responsible for coordinating all of this action out at the park and what a job that must be.. The Fabulous Devilles thank you all and look forward to performing again next year.   http://www.ci.lincoln.ca.us/

All over the World!

As we speak our site is being signed up to more search engines. The reason we are doing this is because we are looking for new fans that love the kind of good time R&B based garage band fun, like we do. Our site is now being visited by good people from all over the world as far away as Moscow Russia, France, London, Germany and all parts of the good old USA. We are still in the process of tracking and mixing our new CD “Be thankful for what you got” We will also be opening the Deville’s online store. Featuring CD”s, Hats Shirts and more. So when you visit please sign up for our e-mailing list.

This Weeks Gigs

On Satruday the 13th we were at the beautifull home of Mark and Theresa Ducket  in Granite Bay playing for Theresa's Birthday Party. What a great crowd.  They were up dancing and partying right from the first song.  Great people, good food and the bar was open.  Doesn't get much better than that!!  We reconnected with some old friends and got to meet and make new ones.  Thanks Mark, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY THERESA !!!!

It's Tuesday the 16th. That means it's Taco Tuesday at Kim's Country Kitchen in Lincoln and the Fabulous Devilles are Back!  There was a good crowd and we had a great time.  The house was full of friends as well as several  talented musicians and singers and they all sat in. Scott, Callie, Carri, Bill, Herman and Dave,  Thank you all for playing and for being there!  We  look forward to coming back and doing it again.

Gene uses 18 watt Marshall (Bluesbreakers) Clone!

Gene loves his "Lil Dog" 18 watt Marshall Clone amp. Basicly it is the same tube circuitry as the amp Eric Clapton recorded with when he was in "John Mayall and the Blesbreakers". It is a true tone machine! One of the reasons The DeVilles are not to loud is that Ernie and Gene use guitar amps that are only in the 20 watt power range (most bands use 50 to 100 watt amps). The DeVille’s use smaller amps and, if needed, mix the guitar, bass, and keyboard sounds through the PA and monitor System, adjusted to meet the needs of the environment. www.littledawgamps.com

More Great songs, More Variety!

The Band is on a campaign to increase the song list (witch now has over 250 songs) to include even more variety including more R&B classics, Standards, Classic Rock Anthems, New & Old Country and Originals.

DeVilles play for George & Joan Ahart

What a site it was! Over100 Campers, Moter Homes, 5th  Wheels, and you name it, were all on hand at the Shooting Champianships held at: Coon Creek Trap Club in Lincoln.
What a treat it was for the boys to party with some very nice folks, have a Super dinner, and then play there little hearts out.

Masters Club Photos By Lynn Fischbeck

At the top of this page you see one of the four new promo photos of The Fabulous DeVille’s. These photos were taken by Lynn Fischbeck. Lynn is a wonderful photographer who happened to be engaged by the Placer Association of Realtors to take pics of the event. She graciously agreed to snap a few of the Boys, and wa la they made the cover as well as the inside page of the Masters Club Magazine. Oh What a Thrill!

The DeVilles are booking June!

The band will be booked at a private function in Granite Bay June 13th. The parties that booked the band first booked them back in 2002. It has been a pleasure to work with such cool folks over the years. Thanks for choosing the DeVille’s.

The DeVilles are in a recording mode.

The Band has been recording tracks the past few months and are be previewing the mixes at this time on the web site music player. Any suggestions any of you might have regarding the tunes would be appreciated. The next two songs coming this week are a new version of Vehicle and The great Wilson Picket number The Midnight Hour. This Saturday the Fab’s will be at the historic Elkhorn Station (see the event calander for details). Come on out if you can.    http://www.west-sacramento.blogspot.com/2007/12/elkhorn-station-roadside-bar-and-grill.html

Ernie Apodaca now uses Lil Dawg Amps!

On the last few shows Ernie has been using his new Lil Dawg amp. It is modeled after an early 50's Fender Tweed Delux. These amps are jam packed with soul power and tone galore. Come and hear his new improved sound. Lil Dawg amps are a Lincoln California based company headed up by Mr. Jim Nickelson. Gene also plays a Lil Dawg. His is modeled after an early 60's 18 watt Marshall. www.littledawgamps.com/  May 9, 2009
